Augmented Reality Diving App (DIVY)

The Augmented Reality Diving App (DIVY) introduces a cutting-edge approach to underwater exploration, enhancing diving orientation, safety, and access to real-time information. It is designed for submerged archaeological sites and marine research missions, unlocking new possibilities for archaeologists, scientists, diving enthusiasts, and Cultural Heritage institutions to interact with and preserve underwater environments in smarter and more immersive ways.

What makes it unique?

DIVY is a pioneering underwater augmented reality (AR) app that transforms submerged exploration into an interactive experience. It combines acoustic geolocalization with real-time communication and allows divers to orient themselves using an underwater map. Unlike GPS, which is ineffective underwater, DIVY’s acoustic localization provides accurate positioning and supports bidirectional acoustic communication with the surface.

This AR system consists of:

-A smart buoy equipped with a GNSS receiver and an acoustic transducer

-An underwater smartphone with a built-in acoustic receiver

This technology creates a networked diving experience, enabling both safety and knowledge-sharing while underwater. DIVY overlays archaeological, biological, or navigational data directly onto the diver’s display through a connected interface, providing clear direction and environmental context.

Key Features

  • Acoustic geolocalization – Track your real-time position underwater, even in GPS-denied environments.
  • Bidirectional acoustic communication – Maintain secure contact between divers and the surface or among team members.
  • Augmented Reality overlays – Visualize archaeological and biological data directly on your display.
  • Enhanced situational awareness – Navigate safely in low-visibility or complex environments/scenarios.
  • Modular and scalable system – Adapt the platform to different missions and user needs.
  • Purpose-built smart buoy – Enables real-time localization and AR content delivery without the need for permanent infrastructure.

Who is it for?

  • Marine archaeologists exploring submerged cultural sites.
  • Recreational divers are interested in exploring submerged archaeological sites.
  • Divers engaged in environmental monitoring.
  • Underwater research institutions require high-performance underwater navigation and data integration systems.
  • Professional diving teams seeking safer and smarter operations.

Why it matters

By bridging the technological gap in underwater navigation and communication, DIVY supports a safer, more insightful approach to underwater exploration. It ensures that submerged heritage and ecosystems can be accessed, studied, and preserved in sustainable and innovative ways.
